The Open Window Dilemma

Three colleagues work in a friendly team in a big open-space office. The first is a chubby and sweet man, who took one of the most fortunate seats- at the window with a wonderful view of the park. However, he is constantly at odds with the second colleague sitting across the table. The First one prefers to close the window, the Second one opens it at every opportunity. The First one prefers warmth and often catches cold, while The Second one needs coolness and fresh air because of blood pressure issues. Besides that, the closed window causes The First one to sweat, which leads to foul body odor in the room. The Third colleague is ready to exchange places with one of them, as he does not care whether the window is open or closed. Unfortunately, neither colleague likes his inconveniently located seat. Nobody desires to argue or cause offense, but the conflict must be resolved in some way.

Pre-negotiation points:

The First Colleague- does not want to change seats. He’s willing to open the window for his colleague, but not if it jeopardizes his own health.

The Second Colleague- wants to resolve the conflict, but not at the cost of his comfort and health. Doesn’t know how to tell the First Colleague about the unpleasant odor without upsetting him.

The Third Colleague- wants to move to a better seat by the window. It has such a great view! Does not care if the window is open or closed.
